The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. – Isaiah 9:2
As we roll into Christmas week and our celebration of Jesus’ first Advent (Coming), I wanted to present you with what may be a new thought.
What if there are two Second Comings of Jesus? Two second Advents? Now, before you get all nasty on me, hear me out.
Paul tells the Ephesians (and us),
“Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.” – Ephesians 3:17 NLT
Jesus himself tells us in John,
“I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.” – John 17:22-23
And once again, Paul tells the Colossians,
“To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” – Colossians 1:27
I know. When the Church talks about the Second Coming of Jesus we are generally talking about his Second physical Advent here on earth. What many consider to be his “real” return.
But the bible also talks much about Christ’s indwelling of our hearts. His presence within us, closer and more alive than most of us realized was possible when we first put our trust in him. For those who experience his presence in this way, it is as real, maybe realer, than sitting down for breakfast with a close friend at your favorite restaurant.
So maybe, as you celebrate Christ’s First physical Advent this week, give some thought to both of his Second Comings. His Second spiritual Advent. The one within you, currently at work here and now. The one that allows the Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) to become a reality within us.
And, as you do, look forward in hope and expectancy to his Second physical Advent. The Advent we hope and long for. The Advent that will make all things new. The Advent where all that is wrong, broken, and hurtful in the world will be removed. The Advent when darkness will be no more, and a great light will shine for all to see. The Advent where, in true God of the universe fashion, nothing is lost, and his Second spiritual Advent is perfected.
Godspeed and Merry Christmas!
